Spherical harmonic analysis and synthesis using FFT: Application to temporal gravity variation
نویسندگان
چکیده
FFT and complex algebra-based methods of spherical harmonic analysis and synthesis are presented. Two computer programs in FORTRAN are developed based on the methods. Both general and special cases are discussed. Special cases involve the analyses of gravity changes of the hydrological origin and the atmospheric origin. Functionals of the Earth’s gravity field such as gravity anomaly and geoidal height can also be computed via synthesis. Thermal-corrected sea level anomaly from TOPEX/Poseidon and atmospheric pressure from ECMWF are used to compute changes of geopotential coefficients due to oceanic and atmospheric mass redistributions. Interesting phenomena in the changes of geopotential coefficients have been identified. The two computer programs can facilitate analyses and syntheses of gravity products from satellite missions such as GRACE. r 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The launch of the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) space gravity mission opened new horizons to the scientific community for environmental monitoring. Through the provision of estimates of temporal changes in the Earth’s gravity field, the products generated from the GRACE mission have enabled studies of mass balance changes in polar regions, deformation caused by very large eart...
متن کاملEfficient and accurate high-degree spherical harmonic synthesis of gravity field functionals at the Earth’s surface using the gradient approach
Spherical harmonic synthesis (SHS) of gravity field functionals at the Earth’s surface requires the use of heights. The present study investigates the gradient approach as an efficient yet accurate strategy to incorporate height information in SHS at densely-spaced multiple points. Taylor series expansions of commonly used functionals quasigeoid heights, gravity disturbances and vertical deflec...
متن کاملA surface spherical harmonic expansion of gravity anomalies on the ellipsoid
A surface spherical harmonic expansion of gravity anomalies with respect to a geodetic reference ellipsoid can be used to model the global gravity field and reveal its spectral properties. In this paper, a direct and rigorous transformation between solid spherical harmonic coefficients of the Earth’s disturbing potential and surface spherical harmonic coefficients of gravity anomalies in ellips...
متن کاملIdentification of Nonstationary Audio Signals Using the FFT, with Application to Analysis-based Synthesis of Sound
In the analysis of sound (for synthesis), digitally sampled audio is processed to extract certain features. The resulting data can be synthesised to reproduce the original sound, or modified before synthesis to musically transform the sound. The analysis primarily uses a harmonic model, which considers a sound to be composed of multiple nonstationary sinusoids. The first stage of analysis is of...
متن کاملGravity Field Analysis from the Satellite Missions CHAMP and GOCE
This work describes global gravity field modeling from observations of the CHAMP and the GOCE satellite mission. In the case of CHAMP the so-called Energy Balance Approach is applied to measurements of GPS high-low tracking of the low orbiting CHAMP spacecraft. In the case of GOCE gravity gradiometry is the main observable. The experience gained processing real data of the CHAMP satellite missi...
